Strategy

We apply rigorous qualitative and quantitative analysis to support our clients in evaluating business opportunities.

The TMT sector continues to evolve at a rapid pace, leading to frequent changes in market environments and requiring constant technological innovation. This unique environment presents both business opportunities and strategic challenges to our clients.

We assist our clients in solving these issues. We tailor our approach to the project’s specific needs, applying the deep industry knowledge of our team and drawing on a range of in-house decision-making tools.

The results of our work help our clients in validating business plans, assessing incremental revenue-generating opportunities and achieving operational efficiency improvements. We also support our clients in implementing such strategic initiatives.

Business plan audit and support

Business plan audit and support

We originally worked with our client to support their successful bid for a mobile operating licence and, since then, we have continued to provide business planning support.

The support provided has included reviewing calculations in our client’s business plan and critically appraising input assumptions. We regularly support them in producing simplified versions of the business model for external parties and internal communication. During these processes, we have typically spent significant time at the client’s site to ensure close collaboration with the client team.

5G strategy development

5G strategy development

We supported a European operator with the development of its 5G strategy, including its spectrum strategy, planned network roll-out for both mobile and fixed wireless access, pricing, take-up and financial impacts.

We investigated potential threats and opportunities from 5G, such as potential loss of market share, reduced costs of existing services and enhanced FWA services. In addition, we developed a financial model to help quantify the potential impacts on our client’s key KPIs.

Our client successfully launched commercial 5G services in November 2019.

Network strategy deep-dive

Network strategy deep-dive

We assisted an Asian mobile operator with planning its 5G network-rollout, how it would meet future forecast network traffic and analysed the network costs under a variety of alternative demand scenarios.

The project included extensive geo-analysis to advise the client on key focus areas for its 5G rollout. We also developed a model to project network costs under different 5G deployment, traffic and spectrum availability scenarios. We also assessed the potential cost savings arising from entering into a network sharing arrangement with a competitive operator.

Pricing tools for consumer tariffs

Pricing tools for consumer tariffs

As a part of an ongoing engagement during which our team has been helping a mobile operator estimate its future network costs, we developed a comprehensive pricing tool for our client.

The tool has allowed our client to test the impact of price and usage changes on profitability metrics and set migration targets from legacy to new tariff plans. The model’s outputs were also used to establish the likely impact of new proposed tariffs on the operator’s business plan.

Strategy for National Broadband Plan

Strategy for National Broadband Plan

We produced a series of techno-economic models to compare and contrast the costs of rolling out candidate access technologies to provide varying grades of broadband performance and coverage.

Working closely with the client’s technical team, we considered fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) and fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) technologies for wireless in order to incorporate current (and expected future) capacities and unit costs of technical equipment items. The model accounted for the different technologies’ cost-performance in the different geographic environments. We assisted in planning for the calculation of the state-aid “claw-back”.
